The project "Portcall Composites Sailing Racing Team" proposes to form a high class team in a racing boat of the J/80 Class for the season 2008/2009, with the owner as leader and skipper at the same time, Jose Carlos Frau, and the skippers Francisco Villalonga and Alberto Vadell, all international sailors.
The aim of the crew for this season is to participate in the main regional calendar races, with the ambition to take part in the Spanish Cup, Spanish Championship and World Championship and the intention of repeating success achieved in other categories.
In the "monotype" races the human team is the most important part of the project and therefore one seeks the most ideal people for their experience and capacity. The crew is formed by sailors coming from the light sailing class, with many years of experience and vast knowledge of the racing areas, as well as a strong fellow feeling between them.
Herewith a sporting record of some of the members of the crew:
We believe that in order to widen the sailing horizons at a personal level and also the range of publicity with a local sponsor such as "Portcall Group", and with a modern cruise ship in open waters, out of the protected ports and lakes, there is only one feasible option for a fast performance and that is the J/80.
The journal "Sailing World Magazine" qualifies the J/80 as the easiest boat to manage, safer and the most satisfactory for crossings and races taking place at a certain distance from the coast, as compared to similar models previously used. The numbers explain why: The under part of the keel has 635 kilos of lead, nearly half of the whole boat. This high connection between the weight of the under part of the keel and the weight of the boat makes the J/80 a stable but light vessel.
The undisputed success of this class lies in four points. The J/80 is an aggressive, technical and very demanding boat, but fun to sail.
The rules of the "one design" class limit the competition expenses making the boat economically attractive for owners and sponsors. The size of the fleet makes the class extremely competitive, and finally the great welcome of the class makes the racing calendar more complete and widely seen in the press.
